Palm Beach AYLUS Raises Money Through Rice to Assist Vulnerable Communities in June 2021

United Nations World Food Program Free Rice: Palm Beach AYLUS Raises Money Through Rice to Assist Vulnerable Communities in June 2021

In June 2021 the Palm Beach AYLUS branch answered an assortment of questions to donate money in rice grains to fight hunger around the world.

The project’s goal was to raise grains (bowls) of rice for people in need.

In order to raise rice, we were required to answer a variety of educational trivia questions that ranged from English Vocabulary to Math, Science, History, foreign languages, etc. Every correctly answered question contributed to the amount of finance/payment that went towards the [United Nations] World Food Program ((UN)WFP). The WFP is one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations and works to improve nutrition and build resilience in vulnerable communities. The website (Freerice) shows the amount of money raised in the form of rice grains. By generating money through the site while answering various questions, we are contributing to the amount of food donated to people in need. We decided on 200 grains of rice, which is 2 bowls, for an hour of community service.

Participants:

Joanna Deng – 5 hours (1000 grains)

Carina Wang – 5 hours (1000 grains)

Alyssa Jin – 5 hours (1000 grains)

Claire Zhao – 5 hours (1000 grains)

Karen Zhao – 5 hours (1000 grains)
