Greater Princeton AYLUS Teaches Middle School Students Public Speaking Skills (20th) in May 2021

The Greater Princeton branch of AYLUS (GPA) has been running biweekly classes to teach middle school students important public speaking skills. We designed the class for beginners with the desire to improve their speaking skills.

We have designed the class curriculum after the beginner manual, which has 10 speech projects with different objectives in each project. In this class, students receive instructor guidance and feedback as they prepare and present their project speeches, making sure they maintain a low filler word count while staying within the time limits and meeting the project objectives for each speech. Students learn valuable knowledge about communication and confidence by engaging in these activities and speeches.

GPA member Alissa Wu (5/14, 2 hrs) teaches these classes and creates a schedule based on past roles and student preferences, updating her class spreadsheet, creating slideshows and activities, finding informational videos, and sending students speech feedback. Her class includes about 10 students, who spend most of the time going through the schedule but they also watch informational videos and do class activities. She facilitates classes and guides each student as they gain experience within each of the meeting roles.
