AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (10/25/2020, #11)

On 10/18/2020, four members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Emily Lin) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

The lesson consisted of three parts: reading and writing. Because Alan Huang and Jasmine were not available, there was two 45 minute sessions of reading & writing.

Reading tutors Emily Lin and Leo Cheng Reviewed the homework of Harrison Bergeron in the beginning of class. After reviewing the homework, a new SAT passage was introduced to the students. The passage was more difficult in terms of vocabulary and grammar, so we spent a long time analyzing the passage about why things were cute. The homework this week was to find 5 vocabulary words from the article and define them.

Today in class, we reviewed indirect and direct objects as well as clauses. We taught students how to conjugate the verb “to be” in order to put a sentence into passive voice. We also had the students identify if a sentence was an active voice or a passive voice(i.e the seeds were eaten by a bird, the bird ate the seeds). Lastly, we taught the students about some spooky vocabulary, having them say the Halloween related word, spelling it,  and defining it.(I.e pumpkin, costume, spooky, etc)

At the end of the entire class, a game of Kahoot with the theme of Halloween was played to let the students practice English vocab and understanding.

The following 4 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours) and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours).
