On July 4, 2020, Raritan Valley Branch Overseas Spoken English Tutoring lessons officially started. Due to COVID-19, most people are staying home this summer, not being able to travel around as much as before. More than ever we feel grateful to the development of computer and internet technology, which allows us to remain connected with the world outside of home. In the past, summer is the time we attend summer programs to learn beyond the school curriculum, while this summer we want to utilize knowledge we have learned and skills we have mastered to contribute to the world we live in. One of the projects on our agenda is Overseas Spoken English Tutoring. English is one of the most commonly used languages for global communication. Fortunate to be native English speakers, Raritan Valley Branch volunteers use their language advantage to offer online spoken English lessons to help students overseas. Through these lessons, foreign students get to improve their pronunciation, increase their vocabulary, and learn the authentic expressions of American English. At the same time, volunteer tutors practice and refine communication skills, teaching skills, time management skills, and team collaboration. Cultural exchange is accomplished as well, opening eyes for both the foreign students and our volunteers.
