AYLUS East Pittsburgh Member Helps out at Community Program: Ready Set Run

Ready Set Run is a program to help younger children (8th Grade and Younger) build a solid foundation on running, particularly 5K races. In this program, volunteers, especially high school students part of the Cross Country team, often come to the local park every Tuesday and Thursday to run, encourage, and push them. This program lasted from early July to early August. August 6th is the official 5K race day for the children and would mark the end of that year’s Ready Set Run. On that day, children from all ages can showcase their hard work and effort.

The practices lasted 1 hour each day, from 9:00 – 10:00 A.M. Usually, towards the end of a practice, the coordinators of this program would let everyone play fun games (tag, relay races, etc.) in an open field. These games would involve running obviously to continue to help build that foundation, but also to keep the practices lighthearted and entertaining for children.
