On July 2nd, 2020, 3 members of the East Pittsburgh Branch (Jason Chen, Kiyara Sawyers, and Christa Davey) volunteered to sort food items and worked together with a team at an assembly line. This assembly line (pictured below) was used to pack boxes with food that would be distributed to people in need. Approximately 10 people worked at the assembly line and each volunteer had a specific job. For example, one would put potatoes in the box, the next would put some kind of fruit in, etc. until it got to one of the last people in line, who would be responsible for folding and closing the box flaps. The last person would stack the boxes so that they can be transported away. Jason diligently closed box flaps, while Kiyara and Christa had other jobs. Instead of working at the assembly line, they unfolded and broke down cardboard boxes for cardboard balers. The balers then compress boxes so that they can be recycled. We volunteered from 9 AM – 11 AM with a short break at 10 AM.
