20190112 East Cobb Branch Held Youth Tutoring Program XIV

On Jan 12, 2019, the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS resume to hold a free tutoring program at East Cobb Library for students’ grades K to 8th after winter break. The tutoring lasted two hours and was open to all students. Many people came in with math and reading related schoolwork for tutors to help the student in the subjects he/she is struggling with or to reinforce curriculum subjects. Tutors Cynthia, David, and Nicolas came in for two hours in order to help tutor many kids.

Our tutors were paired one-on-one with each of the students, so kids were able to have direct conversations. We wanted the students to share the homework they were having trouble on, so tutors. The tutors read with the students and walk them through the steps of solving problems. They encourage the students and socialize with them while going over incorrect answers on tests, homework sheets, workbook pages, or reading passages.

On January 12, East Cobb Branch expanded their Tutoring Program at another new location: Switzer Library. Nick and Rachel volunteered there. Initially, they were supposed to tutor, but since there were no attendees, they were greeted by the very kind staff and got free training from one of the staff James, who has worked at the library for over thirty years. James took them behind the counters and into the employee area to teach them about the job of librarians as well as the long, rich history.  He taught them how to become a librarian by showing them how to sort books by using the decimal system. Unexpectedly, James took them throughout the whole employee area of the library. He let them see all the offices, book sorting area that they got to see operate, and the lounge area. James gave them an insight into a librarians’ jobs and gave them a greater appreciation for the work they do.

The tutoring session is held on Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon every week by the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS. Tutors are high school students that are part of the branch. Sessions are held at East Cobb Library and Swizer Library are open to all students in elementary and middle school.
