Murrieta AYLUS Helps Local Senior Center ( 18th) (7/18–7/23/2023)

Reported by Adora Xiao & Julie Lu :

On Tuesday, July 18: Given the bright day in the early morning, the residents were transported outside as the volunteers began preparing food for the residents. Chunks of banana were cut out, and slices of peaches were topped for a light fruit salad. After handing the cups of fruit out to the residents, a few were taken on a light stroll around the courtyard to enjoy the bright sun and blooming flowers. The volunteers led the residents through the daily chronicle, taking turns reading small trivia about people of note and the day in history. They then took orders for lunch, finding spaghetti to be the overall popular choice. While lunch was in preparation, they took the residents on more walks and spoke with them at length, before transporting them to the dining hall.

On Friday, July 21st: The residents were already aside when the volunteers had arrived, and a few were taken on light walks to pass the time. The volunteers prepared light snacks, using graham crackers broken into small pieces and small slivers of peaches assembled into a tart. Each bowl was topped with a dollop of chocolate, which the residents appeared to heavily enjoy. After the light snack, juice and water were distributed, and the residents had gentle conversations with the volunteers and one another, before the door to the dining room was fixed and the residents were taken down to the dining hall.

On Sunday, July 23rd: The residents stretched out their hands, legs, and joints. While the activities director ran to fix tech in another room, the volunteers led the remainder of stretches. Alongside some cheerful music, everyone stretched out their ankles and feet. After light exercise, juices and water were passed out to the thirsty residents, while one that was craving chocolate was given peaches instead. When the activities director returned, the residents played multiple rounds of tennis, before reading the daily chronicle. The residents and volunteers participated in a sing-along before taking the residents to lunch.

On July 23rd, 2023, Murrieta AYLUS members helped out their local senior center, Atria Park of Vintage Hills. This time, the members were invited to help out at the ice cream parlor in the main building. When they arrived, the members immediately got to work. It wasn’t long before residents started trickling in. In between serving ice cream, the members also chatted with the residents. One senior brought out his playing cards and showed everyone a card trick. Even after repeating it several times, no one could figue out how he managed to do it. When the time came for the ice cream parlor to close down, the members quickly finished serving the last few orders coming in and cleaned up before leaving.
