Chapel Hill Branch Volunteered to Sort Non-perishable Foods at PORCH on July 16, 2023

Food insecurity is defined as when individuals do not have access to sufficient food to pursue a healthy diet due to a lack of money and resources. 1 in 5 children in North Carolina continue to struggle with hunger up until this day (Feeding America).

To combat these rates of increasing food insecurity, on July 16, 2023, our volunteers contributed to PORCH’s mission to expand the number of people who have access to clean, healthy, and fresh food in our community. They did this by sorting an assortment of food (that was donated a week prior to the sort date) according to their rightful category, from beans to snacks and greens to oatmeal packs. In addition, the paper and plastic bags the donations came in were properly recycled.

We are truly grateful to the PORCH coordinators for providing us with such an opportunity. We hope to keep up the efforts of AYLUS, further connecting communities and giving back to said communities.

Volunteers who participated in this event are Stella Kim (1.5 hrs), Ethan Li (ECHHS, 1.5 hrs), Kevin Lu (1.5 hrs), and Luna Chen (1.5 hrs)
