On October 29th, 2022, West Essex AYLUS members volunteered for Saturday in Motion at Somerset Hills YMCA . Saturdays in Motion (SIM) is a recreational program for children with autism. Autistic children and their families join together at Somerset Hills YMCA on Saturdays for two hours of recreation. Volunteers first meet up for preparation including setting up equipment in the gym. Then volunteers carefully guide assigned children through an hour of gym time and a second hour in the pool.
This week in the pool our members Jasmine Chen and Ava Lee were assigned to a special need girl who is unable to stand or swim by herself. Jasmine and Ava took turns to cuddle the girl in the pool for the entire hour. Jasmine also gently lifted the girl and slowly moved her in the pool to let her have fun.
