Murrieta AYLUS Helps STAT Horse Sanctuary (2nd) (10/15/22)

Reported by Jessica Lu

On October 15th, 2022, members Adora Xiao, Hsin-Chen (Julie) Lu, and Jessica Lu went to help STAT Horse Sanctuary.

It was a chilly morning in early fall, the temperature dropped from 90°F a few days ago to 67°F today. Still, members arrived at STAT a little after dawn to begin work. One of the members hasn’t been to the sanctuary so the other members gave her a quick tour before getting to work. As usual, members started off by cleaning the stalls. When the wheelbarrow was almost full, two of the members would go dump it. Members worked diligently, making sure each stall was free of poop before going to the next stall. In no time, they finished 4 stalls and then took a short break by playing with the cat, Spot that “escaped” from the house accidentally this morning.

Next, members got to do something new. They were going to go groom the animals and all of them were very excited. First, they took out the donkey, Yum-Yum. Members found out that grooming donkeys were the same process as grooming horses. They first used a curry brush, then moved on to a soft brush, then a hard brush. The members brushed out the Yum-Yum’s mane and tail, which were pretty tangled. The donkey enjoyed being groomed and members played with her after. After members finished grooming the donkey, they moved on to the horses. They used the same brushes with grooming the horses. Members enjoyed their second visit to the sanctuary and will come back soon!
