In October, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) students continued their Education Help Program. Although schools are restarting, some middle school students are still looking for tutoring classes to improve their academic skills in classes like math, science, or reading. Because of this, GPA is holding tutoring opportunities in core subjects.
GPA member Annie Miao (10/30, 2 hrs) tutored her students in math: This time, Annie continued with her giving her tutee more practice with factoring perfect trinomials with a leading coefficient of 1. They also started factoring other perfect trinomials with different leading terms that required factoring by grouping.
GPA members Karen Yang (10/31, 2 hrs), Kevin Song (10/31, 3 hrs) tutored their students in math: We first began with a very expansive warm up, distributing the quadractices and then combining them. We then rewrote various square root equations into other forms by distributing and raising the quadratics to different powers. We did this problem extensively, with students trying out solutions and making reasonable guesses. They then did more problems distributing it out.
GPA member Catherine tutored her student in math. Catherine tutored another student in reading: I tutored my student in math (11/1) from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. This week, we went over all of the math concepts we previously discussed by working on some complex word problems involving them. We went over GCF, LCM, relatively prime, factorials, factors, etc.
I tutored another student in reading from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Sunday (10/31). The student read a book on Coronavirus and modes of transportation, and we went over the pronunciation and meaning of the words before discussing the content of the books.
GPA has been working with middle school students on important public speaking skills. We designed the class for beginners with the desire to improve their speaking skills. GPA members led by Alissa Wu and Grace Li teach these classes and creates a schedule based on past roles and student preferences, update the class spreadsheet, designs slideshows and activities, present informational videos, and deliver speech feedback. The class has 10 students, who spend most of the time doing speeches, but they also watch informational videos and do other class activities. The teachers facilitate classes and guide each student as they gain experience within each of the meeting roles. On October 29th (2 hrs), the class theme was “Halloween.” The class continued Project 7 Speeches; the aim is to present speeches after doing research to be knowledgeable about the speech topic. After the speeches were over, the teacher gave them advice on their speeches, such as ways to make slides more readable, or guidelines about how many words should go on a slide. They then continued practicing impromptu speeches with questions centered on the theme, such as “What was your favorite Halloween costume?” Students would take a few seconds to think about the question, then give a 1-2 minute speech. After they finished, the teacher gave them feedback did, and pointers on what to improve.
The program allows GPA members to provide reading, writing, speaking, communication, and more to their students across the country.
