On June 6th, the Riverside County AYLUS team hosted an astronomy camp. The team worked together to create a fun and educational experience for the participants. The camp started with an ice-breaker game and continued on with the studying of our solar system. Then the participants were divided into 2 teams who worked as a group together to answer a tricky quiz about what they just had learned. This led to some fun and interesting discussions. Then both groups created their own planet. The TAs worked with the participants to ensure that nobody was left out and that they all had a good time.
The participants gave their own attributes to their planets such as whether the planet was hot or cold, whether it was a gas or rocky planet, and what form of life was to be found on it among others. Once done, they finished it off by naming it. Afterward, the answers to the solar system quiz were revealed and the planets were presented by each group.
The final space mission was to create a space lander while taking into account the attributes that the participants had given their planets. For example, for a cold planet, insulation was important. We finished this fun event with a group picture of all the space landers.
