On December 27th, 2020, the East Cobb Branch went to laser cut plastic for use in face shields from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Today we managed to solve the laser cutter issue. The last time we were here, the laser cutter did not manage to cut completely through the plastic and so we had to slow down our production. Today, we spend the first 10 minutes to move the bed of the laser cutter up and down. This would allow us to slowly find the height at which the focus of the laser would be on the sheets, creating a thin point where the laser’s power was concentrated. Eventually we found it and began to cut the sheets well. However, since we had to move the bed up, we now knew the laser was focusing the beam too high. This means that any warping in the plastic would move the plastic surface further from the focus compared to when the laser was focusing the beam correctly. Therefore, our production was still slowed as we had to carefully arrange a set of magnets to hold the sheets in place. Today we managed to cut 124 shields.
