On 10/19/2020, three members of AYLUS Syosset (Jasmine Chen, Alan Huang and Greene Xue) and two members of Manhasset AYLUS (Matthew Yang and Elise Zhu) held the fifth collaborative Chinese Literature Appreciation class, tutoring 5th grade students to appreciate a Chinese Classic–”Journey to the West”–through reading, analysis, and discussion.
Attending students were grouped into two breakout rooms, each with at least 2 tutors and at least one advisor. The Ponddy Reader website was utilized as the educational tool through which tutors taught students. In this class, teachers began the second chapter of “Journey to the West”. Students took turns reading each paragraph, with the tutors assisting them with pronunciation and understanding of the text. Within these classes, tutors utilized materials like Quizizz, videos, and pictures to enhance cultural appreciation, as well as foster good reading skills and a respect for the language taught to them.
In this class, tutors utilized even more planning for student engagement and included more games, interactive activities, and short video clips to capture students’ attention. The lessons lasted one hour and were followed by a short discussion and conclusion section.
The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Alan Huang (1.5 hours), Jasmine Chen (1.5 hours) and Greene Xue (1.5 hours) from the Syosset branch, and Matthew Yang (1.5 hours) and Elise Zhu (1.5 hours) are members of the Manhasset branch.
(the discussion/feedback session lasted approximately an hour)
