In the four days of 8/17-8/20, members of the Puget Sound Branch held their Writing Series Summer Sessions! These were the first writing classes that our branch offered.
The four-part Writing Series was taught by Kelly Cai and Sarah Xuan, with Sophie Xuan contributing to parts of preparation and class. Prior to the week of class, these two instructors prepared extensive slides with lessons that contained key concepts and examples. The two instructors also held several meetings to discuss the specifics of teaching class. On the first day, we covered the topics of sentence variation and grammar. On the second, we discussed ways of approaching essays through analyzing different prompts and timed writes. The third and fourth day mainly consisted of explaining the four main types of essays: narrative, literary analysis, expository, and argumentative.
On each day, we held one morning session and one afternoon session. We had on average 39 students in the morning session and about 20 students in the afternoon session. Our students came from a variety of different schools in WA and in different states in the U.S.
We got many positive feedback from our students throughout the course and at the end through our End Course Survey. We are grateful for all the support our community and students have shown us with our first writing course.
