On July 17, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) teamed up and taught kids in the subjects of reading and writing.
The 1.5-hour class offered by GPA members Karen Yang and Kathy Yang teach 5 middle schoolers, Aria, Claire, Victor, Meisu, and Helen, on reading and writing. Class times have changed to Fridays from 2-3:30. This week was about the phenomenon “show don’t tell.” The kids began with a warm up writing sample by reading a William Carlos Williams poem and writing a poem in the same style about a random object and responded to their classmates. Then, GPA teachers taught them a lesson with Google Slides, videos, readings and photos on how to show and don’t tell! These tactics included using descriptive language, replacing boring verbs with more interesting verbs and even more ways. The kids also tried to show and don’t tell with an example, “Kevin is angry.” Then, they played a Kahoot to remember and recall everything in the class. Finally, homework arrived (writing another show didn’t tell examples and reading their book talk books) and received their feedback on the class. I also elaborated on the book talks they have to do. It was a very fun class!
GPA members Abigail Bao and Angela Bao spent 1 hour to continue their summer tutoring program with two elementary school students in Princeton. The members taught them how to make a flipbook, and how to make their small flipbook that introduces their own story. The students enjoy making fun flipbook with scribbling faces while learned a lot about their own story. It is important to stay connected with people in our community during this special time to overcome social isolation.
Anthony F Yang did 2 hours of Community Service through the preparation and class of tutoring third graders(Aimee Zhang, Mulan Yang, Nico Fischer, Dayna Li) reading and writing.
