On Sunday, October 4, from 1:30 to 4:30, the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch volunteered at the Long Island Chinese School as assistants to teachers. Volunteers first signed in at the front desk, then they were assigned to different classrooms to help in, where they were given tasks like grading worksheets and homework. With volunteers helping, teachers had more time to focus on teaching without needing to focus on grading any assignments. After the classes had finished, volunteers also assisted in the intermediate level elective chess class, where the volunteers kept the students quiet during the lesson preceding their games. Volunteers then prepared the chess boards for the students’ tournament games, watching over the games to make sure that the boards were properly set up and no illegal moves were made.
Because of the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch volunteers, students and teachers at the Long Island Chinese School had a much more enjoyable and focused experience.
