On September 20, 2026, the AYLUS Roslyn branch volunteered as teacher assistants at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI) from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. During our time there, we helped the teachers with various tasks and guided students through classroom activities.
Our job as teacher assistants is to ease the teachers’ responsibilities. We first start off by greeting the students and helping them get settled in. Throughout the class, we help teachers with various tasks such as handing out and collecting worksheets, answering any questions from students, and bringing students to the bathroom when needed. During breaks, we take the students to the bathroom and buy snacks with their coupons. By taking on these responsibilities, we reduce the teacher’s workload so they can focus on teaching and keeping students engaged.
On this particular day, from 4 pm to 5pm, teachers met with parents and presented the lessons and activities planned for students to do this year. This meeting gave parents a better understanding of what their children will be learning this year. While the meeting was taking place, we continued helping with the teacher and making sure students were still being supervised.
Overall, taking on the role of teacher assistants gives us valuable life experience. By helping students and assisting the teachers with classroom tasks, we help the day run more smoothly, while also creating a fun and engaging learning environment. This experience allows us to gain a sense of responsibility, patience, and teamwork.
