Activity & Impact
On Saturday, September 12, from 1:00 to 4:30 PM, the AYLUS North Hollywood Executive Board hosted a professional development workshop at Valley Plaza Library with 12 members in attendance. The group previously hosted a first-aid skills workshop at the same location.
At the start of the workshop, members participated in a “networking” bingo icebreaker where the goal was to meet everyone in the room and ask them questions ranging from, “Have you done an internship,” to “Have you been interviewed?”
Following that, Kayla Arvizu and Zoie Cha presented the email etiquette portion of the workshop, highlighting the skills necessary for a good email, including subject lines, proofreading, and following-up. At the end of the section, members participated in an activity where they practiced condensing an email while maintaining its key information and professional tone.
Hasmik Yedoyan and Noah Nguyen presented the resume portion of the workshop, teaching members about the resume-writing process and the specific elements scanners look for when reading a resume. Members then participated in an activity where they had to evaluate sample resumes and determine if it should be accepted, rejected, or waitlisted, with justification.
Andi Villamor presented the LinkedIn and networking portion of the workshop, emphasizing the importance of building a professional online presence and effectively communicating with potential connections, using examples from her personal experience. At the end of the section, members worked on improving sample LinkedIn messages, evaluating elements such as introductions, interests, and requests.
The workshop then moved into interview skills, where members learned about interview etiquette, professional communication, and effectively responding to interview questions using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method. Members participated in a “Bad Interview Buzzer” activity where members sat through a mock interview and buzzed when they thought the interviewee made a mistake. The workshop concluded with speed interviews, allowing members to practice their interviewing skills with our executives and gain experience responding to different, common questions.
