The first day of the CRAB biology summer camp occurred on August 24. THe CRAB team covered chemistry and biochemistry. This lecture contained the hardest conceptual concepts as chemistry is a difficult subject, especially for those who learned about it for the first time. Teacher Zoe Li covered the foundations of chemistry, general concepts about macromolecules, and carbohydrates. Teacher Isabelle Yang taught the properties of water and lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
14 students attended the lecture with three active participants (Chloe, Ethan, Tammy). The slideshow for this lecture was 106 slides with a Wayground (Quizizz) game concluding the lecture. The lecture started and ended on time.
60% of students who responded to the form said the teaching was at a good pace while 40% said the lecture pace was too fast. When asking respondents whether they could answer the questions in the slideshow, one student could answer most of the questions but thought too much time was given, three students could answer most of the question and thought the right amount of time was given, one student could not answer the questions because not enough time was given for the question, and one student could not answer the questions because the lecture information was confusing or forgotten. All respondents reported that the teacher’s voices were clear and there was a perfect amount of information on the slides. While the lecture was difficult, students understood the overall concepts of chemistry and biochemistry.
