On Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., AYLUS Oakland Gardens held its 253rd volunteer event as part of our African Library Project (ALP) Book Drive. Our young volunteers organized all the books previously collected for the project and carefully selected books that were new or in gently used condition.
The volunteers sorted the books according to the ALP reading-stage categories: Early Readers, Emerging Readers, Independent Readers, Advanced Readers, and Reference & Enrichment, including dictionaries and atlases. After sorting, the volunteers carefully packed the selected books into boxes.
In total, our volunteers selected 545 books and packed them into six boxes, which will be shipped to the African Library Project warehouse in New Orleans, Louisiana. From there, the books will be consolidated and shipped to the Libibing Primary Library in Lesotho, Africa, where they will provide valuable reading and educational resources for local students.
Through this activity, our young volunteers learned the importance of organization, teamwork, responsibility, and giving books a second life. Their efforts helped prepare hundreds of books for children who will have the opportunity to read, learn, and explore new ideas through these donated books.
