On Monday July 27th, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered with NOSH Delivers. NOSH Delivers is a food pantry in Glen Cove that strives to make sure families in need have access to food. They offer goods such as produce, meat, dairy and even personal hygiene products like soap and toothbrushes.
As soon as we got to the food pantry there was lots of work for us to complete. We started with putting stickers onto bags for NOSH bags. Shortly after, we had to quickly decorate KFIP bags as we were running low on breakfast and lunch bags. We used materials like markers, stickers and gems and drew on brown paper bags so when a child picked up a bag they could admire a detailed and colorful bag instead of a dull and boring bag. After, we decorated many KFIP bags, we sorted through fresh produce and wiped it dry to be given out in the farmers market. NOSH had gotten a delivery of apples because grocery stores were trying to clear out their inventory to make room for fall season apples. We checked over apples to ensure that there were no holes, it wasn’t rotting or it wasn’t close to going bad. Once we emptied all the bags of apples we received, we filled banana crates with them and they were stored in refrigerators.
One of our last tasks was bagging bread that came in boxes because we needed a sanitary way to hold them and to give them out. We bagged three to four pieces of bread into bags and filled two banana boxes with them. Some pieces of bread near the bottom we couldn’t use because it had simply gotten too mushy from heat and the pressure from other pieces of bread. During our last hour we restocked and organized products on the shelves so it would be neat for our customers. Finally, we ended the day with pantry guiding some of the last shoppers.
