On the afternoon of Saturday, May 16, 2026, AYLUS Great Neck volunteers welcomed local children and families to an afternoon of storytelling, creativity, and hands-on learning in the multipurpose room of the Great Neck Main Library. The event combined engaging read-aloud sessions with interactive crafts, creating a fun and educational experience for participants.
The program began with storytime. Volunteer Nathan Li read Jewish Mindfulness for Kids by Blanca Sissa, introducing children to mindfulness practices and emotional awareness. Volunteer Jiangyuan Yu followed with Ho’onani: Hula Warrior by Heather Gale, a story celebrating courage, self-expression, and cultural identity. Finally, volunteer Amber Zhou read Eyes That Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho, encouraging children to embrace self-confidence and appreciate diversity.
Following storytime, volunteers organized a variety of hands-on activities. Andrew Li and Goldman Tian guided children through origami projects, primarily teaching participants how to fold origami cranes. The activity helped children strengthen hand-eye coordination, patience, and fine motor skills while encouraging creativity and focus. Rainie Cheng and Victoria Xu introduced basic crochet techniques, helping participants develop concentration, perseverance, and confidence as they learned a new craft.
Throughout the event, Jolynn Li and Rebecca Xu helped coordinate the program, assisted participants, and ensured that activities ran smoothly. Volunteers worked closely with children and families, providing guidance and encouragement so that everyone felt welcomed, supported, and engaged.
In total, nine AYLUS members contributed to the event, working together to provide a meaningful experience for community members. Through reading, crafting, and personal interaction, volunteers helped children develop confidence, creativity, and new skills while fostering a stronger sense of community. The event reflected AYLUS’s commitment to promoting youth leadership and meaningful community service.
