AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch members beautify Weeping Beech Park and Kingsland Homestead (04/11/2026)

On Saturday, April 11th in the year 2026 from 8:45 to 12:15 members of AYLUS Oakland Gardens picked up trash, pruned plants, sweeping, and raked leaves at Weeping Beech Park and Kingsland Homestead as their 220th event. This was possible under the guidance of Maureen Reagan and Ada, who we were able to learn a lot from throughout our time spent working with them. We were taught about local species, and why certain tasks were necessary.  Many members came out to dedicate their time to the betterment of the community.

Our members were also instructed by Maureen to pick up the Sweetgums scattered across the ground at the Kingsland Homestead. Although it was tedious work as there were thousands of them, our members were happy to oblige. The Sweetgums were a tripping hazard to other members of the community, as well as being dangerously spiky. Not only that, we also picked up the trash that was on the floor at Weeping Beech Park. In total, our members picked up 107 bags worth of trash. Raking leaves were important because wet leaves provided a slipping hazard. In order to keep the population safe, it is imperative that we do these tasks. Some of our members used brooms to sweep the pathways, which were covered with dirt. This would allow for people to walk on cleaner paths.  Older members were also given the job of pruning. They use garden pruners to cut away dead branches of trees and shrubs. Some shrubs that grew too close to the pathways and fences were also cut.

Maureen provided our members with break time and snacks. She also taught us about the area. We found a decomposing log, and she let our members take a look at it. She taught us about decomposers, including pill bugs, which were found on the log. They break down dead material, such as the wood we found. They are crucial in our environment and maintaining stability in our ecosystem. Many of our members were eager to learn about this and gathered around to hear her talk about it. This was useful information, and helped our members learn why every single part of an ecosystem was necessary.  We put them back exactly where they were found because pill bugs avoided the light.

Thank you to all members who attended today’s event. We are all extremely grateful to Maureen Reagan and Ada, who take their time to teach us during the events and care about the environment. Maureen goes as far to provide snacks for our members, showing her kindness. Furthermore, a special thank you to our parent advisors. Our work would not be possible without their supervision.
