On Sunday, March 15, 2026, volunteers from AYLUS Roslyn Branch worked as TAs at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI) from 1:30 to 5:00 pm. Our roles as volunteers involved a variety of tasks that required our attention, and we assisted both the teachers and children with various tasks and work they had to do.
We greeted the kids warmly and helped them unpack and settle in as soon as they entered their classrooms. After that, we assisted the teacher with various tasks, including gathering homework from the pupils, escorting them to the restroom, and delivering worksheets. TAs assisted students who were struggling in class or had trouble understanding. By keeping the class under control and prepared to learn, we help calm troublesome students and alleviate some of the teachers’ workload. We bring the students to their individual culture classes after school, where they participate in a range of activities, including yoga, calligraphy, art, dance, martial arts, and yo-yo. We go to our assigned classes after dropping off the kids, where we help a new set of kids in their culture class. At the end of the day, we ensure that students are packed and safely sent home to their parents.
Overall, our work as TAs can make it easier for both teachers and students to interact with and participate in the class. Although the work assigned to TAs was very little, it helped teachers manage their overwhelming workload and reduced some of the stress that came with it. As TAs, we established unique relationships with our students and helped them overcome any challenges they might have faced during the day. Although volunteering was stressful, the happiness and memories we shared made it worthwhile in the end.
