On Saturday, December 13th, from 1:30 to 4:30, two AYLUS Roslyn members at CP Nassau’s Hicksville residential home.
We began by baking brownies together. Some of the residents enjoyed helping with certain steps, like mixing ingredients or pouring in the batter.
While the brownies were in the oven, we started working on a large Christmas-themed poster. At the center was a big sign saying, “Merry Christmas,” with colorful letters. The poster was decorated with many wooden DIY ornaments, including colored Christmas trees, bells, and classic holiday ornaments. Residents also added stickers and decorations, making the poster light up. When we finished decorating, we hung this poster up inside the home.
Afterward, we enjoyed the freshly baked brownies together. This was a nice and relaxing break for both the residents and volunteers, since the poster was a major project. Next, we played a game that could help residents practice their motor skills. The game was throwing a ball at a board, similar to darts.
To finish off the day, we worked on puzzles together. Residents, with the help of volunteers, excitedly did many rounds of puzzles, working on their problem solving skills.
Overall, the volunteers had a great time spending the day with the residents, and the activities brought a lot of enjoyment and festive spirit. We look forward to returning again soon!
