Mulching and Cleanup at The Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground (10/18/2025)

On Saturday, October 18th, 2025, from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., volunteers from the AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch participated in their 199th volunteer event with Roxana at The Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground, focusing on cleaning, mulching, and maintaining the site’s natural spaces.

Volunteers were divided into groups of high school and middle school students to complete different tasks. Some filled wheelbarrows with mulch using shovels and transported them to tree areas, while others spread the mulch evenly around the trees and garden patches. The mulch layer was kept about 10–15 cm thick to help prevent weeds from growing back.

To keep the area neat and safe for guests, some other members concentrated on sweeping and cleaning the sidewalks and roadways. To increase accessibility and visibility in the region, one of our employees pruned overgrown branches that had begun to dangle too low. Additionally, volunteers collaborated to efficiently transfer wheelbarrows into and out of the fenced zones.

Whether it was mulching, route cleaning, or branch trimming, everyone’s concerted efforts made the Burial Ground healthier, more secure, and more pleasant for guests. In addition to making the property seem better, the heavy layer of mulch protected the trees and kept weeds from growing again. This event demonstrated how regular upkeep and cooperation can significantly improve public areas, guaranteeing their continued beauty and well-being.

Lastly, We would like to thank all the volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to this event, as well as Roxana and the park staff for their guidance and continued support throughout the morning. Their teamwork and dedication made the cleanup a true success, demonstrating how collaboration and community spirit can make a lasting difference in maintaining and improving local green spaces.
