One Saturday, September 27th, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the Roslyn Branch helped organize a party for people with intellectual disabilities. We worked with the UCPA of Bayville, an intermediate care facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities, located at 85 Bayville Avenue, Bayville, 11709.
In the morning, we arrived to greet all the residents, and they were very excited to see us! After, we started to help set up for the party by inflating the pool and filling water balloons with food coloring and water. Next, we started setting up tables and wheeling out the residents one by one to take photos with them. While this was happening, we also assisted in setting up food trays around the tables as we were having a barbecue. There were many delicious foods such as burgers, macaroni salads, pumpkin pies, and Italian sandwiches.
In the afternoon, we helped the residents have their meals and played games with them. We filled the pool with water and dropped a bunch of pumpkins inside and had the residents fish them out with nets. It was very fun and the residents enjoyed it very much! We also set up cans for the residents to throw cornhole bags at, which was also extremely exciting. There were also water balloons with food coloring inside, which added even more excitement to the various activities that we set up. After a long and fun afternoon of playing with water and other activities, it was time for the residents to head back inside after a busy day. We rolled the residents back into the building, where they rested for the day. Although this experience was very fun, it also required a large amount of patience and engagement because it was important to help the residents in the best way that we could! We are excited to be back for more activities with the residents, so we can have more fun!
