On Saturday, September 21st, from 1to 4pm, 5 members of AYLUS’s Roslyn group volunteered at CP Nassau in Belmore.
The first thing we did when we got there was bake brownies because we brought baking ingredients and we should get it in the oven first. We first melted the butter and then added the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, flour, and a pinch of salt. The residents helped add the ingredients, crack the eggs, and mix the batter.
While the brownies were baking, we brought out the bracelet making kit and made some bracelets. We added the residents initials on the bracelet because there wouldn’t be enough of the letter beads for everyone’s names. The bracelets looked really good and some residents got 2 bracelets because they asked for them. After bracelets, we made suncatcher window paintings where you basically just put paint inside this plastic thing and wait for it to dry and when it’s dry you can hang it on whatever you want and it will look really nice. It’s like coloring in the lines except with paint and it was really fun.
After we were mostly done, the brownies were finally finished baking and we waited for a little while so it could cool down before giving them to the residents. The residents seemed to really enjoy the brownies and we also tried some and thought they were delicious. Later, after everyone ate brownies, we played Uno and Bingo and it was a lot of fun. Then some people wanted to do arts and crafts so we did arts and crafts and that was also really fun.
We all had a great afternoon with the residents. Helping and playing with them is very joyful. We hope to come back soon!
