On Tuesday, July 15th, 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., the Roslyn branch of AYLUS volunteered at a non-profit organization, known as Nosh Delivers! Food Pantry, which aims to support families with food insecurities using a food distribution program.
Throughout the event, our volunteers assisted with various tasks, with our primary task being to prepare food packages that would later be delivered to other families. We began by assembling and filling the food bags with essential items, such as meat and food dips into bags, packed according to the specified amounts for each family’s order. After the bags were arranged, we then stored them into fridges for a truck to pick up. Once this was checked off the list, we helped with produce preparation, by removing the husks from the corn and ensuring it was ready to be distributed. Along with these two tasks, egg packages were cut into smaller sections to facilitate easier organization and packing in the fridge, and to create a more equal distribution towards customers. Midway through the event, we had begun to experience a shortage of kid meal bags, or “KFIP” bags, which required us to create and prepare additional amounts. With creating these bags, we drew and decorated cute, cheerful designs to help children evoke feelings of happiness, or even warmth, when choosing their bags.
With participating in the community service event, it became a genuinely eye-opening experience. It has allowed us to communicate and to connect with a variety of people, including customers, and even staff. In addition to that, we were also provided with both meaningful and valuable lessons that highlighted the importance of cooperation, partnership, and possibly even organization. All things considered, in this experience we have become grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such a significant and fulfilling program.
