AYLUS Roslyn Provides Food to Local Families Through NOSH Delivers! Food Pantry (85th) on July 7th, 2025

On Monday, from 9 am to 1 pm, members of the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the NOSH Delivers food pantry in Glen Cove. NOSH Delivers’ mission is to help the community by providing greater access to food for anyone in need. In addition to operating a food pantry, NOSH organizes weekly food deliveries to families. These NOSH Bags are filled with ingredients for multiple meals and are delivered by volunteers. During our time volunteering there we completed a variety of different tasks as it was a particularly busy day at NOSH. When we first arrived there was heavy downpour so a tent had to be set up outside. Even with the rain drenching everything, we prevailed and had the tent ready.

With it being the first day of the week, NOSH Bags were to be prepared and delivered. We helped assemble 250 bags that were to be delivered that day. We would fill NOSH Bags with food and keep track of the supply. Afterwards, we went through extra bags that were not delivered and sorted the contents of them. We then redistributed them to be used as stock on the shelves.

We also sorted a large amount of candy that was donated. We sorted the individually wrapped candy into chocolate, gummies, and gum. This allows for the staff at the food pantry to easily use them for different purposes including the free candy basket at the front desk.

Throughout the rest of our time, we sorting and organization. We mostly organized the large boxes of food in the back of the pantry. We would also rearrange the shelves so all products were easily accessible to all individuals. We adjusted the shelves for the best client experience.

Finally at noon, the truck of the deliveries finally arrived. With it came tons of produce, baked goods, and much more. All of these goods must be sorted and stored before NOSH closes so nothing goes bad. We had the job of picking out any produce that was molded, rotten, or damaged so all fruits and vegetables are fit for consumption. Though it was an unpleasant job, we finished sorting all of them before closing time.

Our experience volunteering in this day allowed us to gain a better understanding and appreciation of how a food pantry operates and the effort behind it. Plus, we also had a good time finding new foods we never knew existed, making our experiment more memorable.
