On May 23, 2025, our team hosted our 158th event. The AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch has partnered with Books for Taiwan in order to collect books to donate. This is the second year that we have done this, motivated by our success from last year.
Books for Taiwan is a non-profit volunteer group in New Jersey, USA. Through fundraising and volunteers, they collect English books for rural schools, prisons, and catering schools in Taiwan. These books are also from libraries or the community, which are transported through ships. They have been doing this for over 20 years, donating a total of 1.2 millions books. Their original mission was to give back to Taiwan’s hometown and provide a large range of supplementary teaching materials for free so everyone can be familiar with English.
One member from the Books for Taiwan organization, Richard Wu, would be aiding us in bringing the books to be shipped. As the books were organized into boxes, members helped carry these boxes out of the house and into the car for them to be shipped off. We also made sure the boxes are sealed tightly so the books do not fall out of them on the way to Taiwan. In total, we have mailed out 19 boxes, with a total of 1,518 books. We hope that the communities in Taiwan enjoy these books.
Thank you to our members and Richard Wu for their hard work.
