On Sunday, March 9th, 2025, from 9 am to 12 pm, volunteers from AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch participated in a general clean up at Kissena Park with Roxana. Members worked together in order to rake leaves and clean up branches as well as weeds.
During the event, our members were split into groups in order to rake leaves around the fence, clean up natural litter such as branches and vines, and clipping plants under the guidance of Roxana. We had one group that consisted of 10 middle schoolers and elementary schoolers raking and bagging leaves on the outside of the fence. With the rest of the volunteers, they are split into 2 groups. One group is on the inside of the fence in order to pick up the branches and throw it over the fence. Once the branches are over the fence, the second group picks up the branches and either throws them into the truck or creates organized piles. On top of that, we have some members in charge of using loppers to cut small plants and taller branches to clean up the area. Our members were able to fill the truck multiple times with branches and plants, working together to grow as a group and ensuring safety. Not only that, our members were also able to fill up 95 bags of natural debris, such as leaves or twigs.
We would like to give our thanks to our members for their hard work and cooperation. As well as special thanks to Roxana for guiding us through the event. Without her guidance we wouldn’t have been able to achieve the clean-up to its fullest potential. We would also like to thank Jobe Walker, Roxana’s supervisor, for looking after and taking care of the environment as well, for without your hard work the environment would be under harsher conditions.
