On March 10th, AYLUS volunteers gathered at the Great Neck Library with a shared purpose: to help prepare for the upcoming calligraphy class by organizing ink, brushes, and paper. These essential items were crucial to ensure that every participant had the necessary tools to engage fully in the lesson. During the class, each volunteer was assigned a specific role to contribute to the smooth flow of the session. Three volunteers were tasked with distributing paper to the learners, ensuring everyone had enough to practice their calligraphy. Meanwhile, another volunteer took on the important responsibility of translating the instructor’s instructions into English, making the lesson accessible to all participants. As the teacher demonstrated the art of calligraphy, the learners followed the steps with great attention and care. At one point, a learner encountered a challenge, and the teacher provided guidance, with the volunteers assisting in translating the advice for those who needed it. The learners worked diligently throughout the lesson, absorbing the techniques and skills being taught. It was a valuable learning experience for everyone involved in the calligraphy class. After the lesson concluded, the volunteers took on the task of cleaning up the materials, ensuring the library was left in order. Following the class, AYLUS volunteers and learners had the opportunity to gain more information about calligraphy and Chinese culture, deepening their understanding and appreciation of these subjects. This knowledge was not only enriching but also important for their personal growth. Additionally, the translators had the chance to improve their English language skills and build their confidence. The volunteers spent a wonderful time together, enjoying the experience and fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. It was a day filled with learning, cultural exchange, and shared joy.
