On February 23rd, from 1:30 to 4:30, AYLUS volunteers helped at the Long Island Chinese School located at SUNY Old Westbury.
Over the course of three hours volunteers were dispersed to different classrooms. In each classroom they helped with various tasks, like mentoring students in class, printing extra copies of tests and helping clean up the classroom during break.
In the last hour of volunteering, select AYLUS volunteers were tasked with helping out at the chess class. The usual coach, Coach Harold, was out so he was replaced with Coach Jack. The students were taught a quick lesson about opening tactics and checkmates. After the lesson AYLUS members helped set up the boards and pieces, along with watching the games and keeping score of who won and lost. At the end of class volunteers packed everything up and tidied the classroom before leaving.
Overall AYLUS volunteers are able to make a positive impact on their community every week, and look forward to helping out. With their efforts the Long Island Chinese School is a more safe and fun place to learn.
