Syosset AYLUS Organization Attends Long Island Native PlantInitiative helps out at the Greenhouse on 02/08/25

On February 8th, the Syosset AYLUS organization volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, working at the greenhouse for the day. The primary goal for the day was to focus on seeds and prepare for the upcoming season. We started by moving in more soil batches inside the greenhouse to prepare for future use. We took containers, filled them with soil, and ensured that the soil was evenly distributed to avoid overloading the containers. Afterward, we moved the filled containers into a different greenhouse designed for storage, which had a control panel to regulate the greenhouse settings and ensure the soil stayed in good condition throughout the winter. Meanwhile, another group of AYLUS members worked on sifting out more seeds using tools like a grater and a wooden tool to press against the plants and extract the seeds. Once the tray was filled, we dumped the seeds into a larger bin, where they were later refined to separate the seeds from other materials. Pam, one of the workers at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, guided us through various tasks and gave us instructions on how to complete them. We also brought in gallons of water or milk jugs, where we made holes in the containers with a tool and filled them with soil to raise our own plants. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was very successful in assisting the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and accomplishing the goal for the day.
