On January 18th, the Syosset AYLUS Organization volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative greenhouse. We had a large group of volunteers, allowing us to divide into smaller teams and complete a variety of tasks efficiently. Our activities included cleaning the greenhouse, sifting seeds, making new pots, and moving cylinder blocks and palettes to create additional space in the nursery. Cleaning the greenhouse was a crucial task, as it provided a cleaner, more organized environment for future work. We removed dirt, debris, and other materials, and then properly disposed of them in trash cans. The waste was later transported to the composting area, where it was discarded appropriately in the dumpster. We also focused on preparing and organizing pots. Many of the pots had become stuck together, so we separated them, making it easier to add soil for planting. Additionally, we organized the pots by size, sorting them into categories for future use. One of the key tasks we worked on was sifting seeds. By placing the seeds on a grater, we were able to remove debris, large particles, and unwanted materials, such as weed seeds. This process ensures a more even distribution of viable seeds, which contributes to better germination rates and healthier plant growth. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS Organization made significant contributions to the greenhouse, successfully completing various tasks that will aid in the ongoing work of the Long Island Native Plant Initiative.
