North Spessard Beach Cleanup
Date: December 29, 2024
Duration: ~1 hour
On December 29, 2024, three members of the AYLUS branch, joined by two additional volunteers, participated in a beach cleanup at North Spessard Beach.
In just one hour, the group collected 27 pounds of trash. The waste included large amounts of styrofoam and glass bottles, both of which pose significant risks to marine wildlife. Styrofoam fragments are easily ingested by animals, leading to health issues, while glass shards and bottles can injure wildlife or create dangerous traps.
This cleanup directly helped to protect the beach’s ecosystem by reducing hazards for sea turtles, coastal birds, and other marine species that depend on clean shorelines for survival. Efforts like these ensure safer habitats and prevent further pollution from harming the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems.
