On November 8th, starting at 7:30 PM, eight AYLUS volunteers gathered at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a non-profit organization that seeks to pack and send food to starving children worldwide. This time, they were to be sent to kids in El Salvador. We helped out in putting in the ingredients, weighing, and packaging the food. When we walked in, the presenter (a head of staff) gave us an explanation of the goals of FMSC and directions on how to help out in the process. It explained that we would be packaging ‘Manna’, a food package created by food scientists that give an exact healthy amount of food with cheap ingredients. It is comprised of rice, veggies, vitamins, and soy. We separated into groups (AYLUS volunteers joined a group of another youth organization) and chose one of four roles: scooping – putting the ingredients in, bagging – weighing the bags, sealing, which was only for adults – using a sealing machine to seal the bags, and carrying – putting the bags into boxes & lifting them onto a truck. Scoopers also were aided by replenishments of their supply of ingredients if they ever ran out. After an hour and a half, 150 volunteers (including AYLUS) finished with 123 boxes packed (with 36 packs of Manna each)! That is about 26,568 meals fed 73 kids for a year. Averagely, Aylus group packed approximately 3,212 meals fed 8.8 kids for a year.
