On Saturday, November 2, 2024, five members of the Newtown AYLUS Branch hosted the branch’s first mahjong teaching event at a local senior center, the Holland Village Senior Living, from 2:00-3:30 PM.
Our members introduced and guided those interested in the traditional game by giving a brief history and overview of the game, introducing them to its basic rules, the numerous suits, and the ultimate goal of forming sets and pairs. This foundation was crucial for the seniors, as it helped them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the game.
Next, our members guided the participants in a practice round of mahjong, demonstrating the mechanics of gameplay and the intellectual nature of the seemingly simple game. During the practice, our members continually offered advice and explained some of the many strategies involved, emphasizing the importance of strategy and luck in each move.
During the practice round, we played and chatted with the seniors, getting to know each other over the game. Members recounted memories of their lives and traditions with the seniors, forming unexpected connections with each other and adding a personal touch to the event.
By the end of the hour, not only had participants gained a foundational understanding of mahjong, but they also left with new friendships and a sense of community; our members enjoyed getting to know the seniors and introducing them to an important aspect of Chinese culture, and we look forward to our next mahjong event!
