On Sunday, October 20th, AYLUS Roslyn Chapter volunteered at the Chinese School of the Long Island Chinese Cultural Association from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Our job as a volunteer was to help the children learn and complete their homework as a teacher assistant.
As a teacher assistant, we will help the teacher manage classroom discipline and help the children learn and complete their homework. When we enter the classroom, we must quickly get into the working state. The first task is to help the teacher to call the students to confirm whether the students are due, and then the teacher will start the class. After the teacher finishes the class, he will assign homework to the students, and as a teaching assistant, we will help guide the students on how to complete their homework. In addition to these learning-related matters, when the students want to go to the toilet, we will help as teaching assistants. After the class, the children will have a break. The teaching assistants will let the children line up and give them coupons to exchange for snacks. After finishing today’s Chinese class, the Chinese school also provides many other cultural courses such as music, dance, calligraphy, art, etc. These courses will be relatively easy, but the teaching assistants still need to provide help to the teachers and students.
In short, being a teaching assistant is a hard job. It is not only physically exhausting but also mentally exhausting. But besides that, this job is also very meaningful. In this job, we learned how to be patient and how to treat others more gently and tolerantly. It is undoubtedly a difficult but fulfilling experience.
