AYLUS Great Neck Branch Volunteered at Planting Fields Arboretum on 9/14/2024(44th)

On 9/14/24, Saturday, AYLUS Great Neck branch went to Planting Fields Arboretum, a state historic park that has vast fields, lush woodlands, a museum, and more.

There, we worked with the Syosset branch to take care of a large portion of the woodlands. Since most of the area’s English ivy was removed over the summer and the past few weeks, we moved on to putting mulch it. Mulching the area would smother the small weeds, help the plants maintain moisture, and just improve the woodland aesthetic overall. This also prevents the weeds from growing since the mulch prevents sunlight from reaching them.

2 groups were formed and sent off with shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows. We spent most of our time transporting and spreading the mulch, so when our shift was over, we covered most of the area already.
