This is AYLUS Oakland Garden’s 113th event.
On August 22, 2024, from 5:00 to 6:30pm, the members from Oakland Gardens branch went to Crocheron Park for a watering event.
Before the event started we went to Jessica’s house to pick up the hose that she supplied for us to water the plants with. We arrived and started working putting the hose in place, starting the water, and making sure all plants were happy and healthy. Getting the hose in and out was very hard to do, mostly because it was extremely heavy. It was also because the hose was extremely long and hard to pick up, we had to put it into a container to bring it places and the container it was in was digging into our skin.As we watered we noticed that the milkweed plants had many small bugs on them. We learned that these bugs were called Boxelder bugs. These bugs are not invasive and don’t cause any harm, they’re just annoying because they often appear in big numbers. We also noticed that the milkweed pods were usually green and closed up, but this time some of the pods were brown and opening up, releasing many seeds to grow more. While we were watering we noticed this weird blue grape looking plant. After a bit of research we found out that this weird plant was called the New Jersey Blueberry. After asking Jessica if these blueberries were edible she answered our answer by saying even if these berries were edible she wouldn’t test to see what they would taste like, due to the fact that the soil they we grown in wasn’t one of the best kinds.
Overall we watered many plants today and learned new things while helping the community enjoy beautiful sights. Making the environment more welcoming to all of the visitors who come here to play and enjoy the beauty of Crocheron Park.
