Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer at The Arboretum State Park on 7/21/24
On Saturday, July 20th 2024, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, the AYLUS Great Neck Branch volunteered at The Arboretum State Park. Multiple historic plant species are preserved there for people to come to visit and view. We volunteered to remove invasive species such as the English ivy. Our goal was to remove as much English ivy as possible from our assigned area.
We separated them from the plants and the ground, or even from the historic species. We used tools such as shovels, grass shears, loopers, and rakes to do so. Once we had pulled away the English ivy we loaded them into buckets which eventually got taken over to a truck. Additionally, the truck would drive to an area where the English ivy would be disposed of and taken away.
Invasive species can mess with the biodiversity in the environment. If we don’t remove them in time monoculture is presented. With monoculture present, it can deprive other species of plants thriving while also threatening food security. Today we learned how important it is to get rid of invasive species as it can affect species of plants around it.
