On Saturday, July 20th, from 1 to 4 pm, the Great Neck and Roslyn Branches of AYLUS volunteered for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County (CP Nassau) at a group home in East Meadow. Today the volunteers did many fun activities with the residents, and everyone had a great time. First, we started by baking chocolate chip and cranberry cookies. The residents all enjoyed mixing and adding in the ingredients, and although their oven wasn’t working today, the cookie dough looked really delicious, and the residents will definitely enjoy the cookies very much when they are baked at a later date. After the dough was put in the fridge, we moved onto arts and crafts. First, in the spirit of summer, the residents decorated paper fans with summer themed stickers. Not only did the fans help keep them cool, they also looked very nice. Afterwards, we made little paper flower bouquets, and all the residents loved them. For our final craft, we decorated plates with designs of animal faces, and each resident got to choose their favorite animal. Volunteers also made animal plates for residents that were not here today, so they got something too. Afterwards, we played a couple rounds of Jenga, and a couple heated rounds of Uno. Overall, volunteers and residents had a great time during the three hours, making it a great success.
