AYLUS Roslyn Volunteers at Jones Beach Air Show (5th) on May 25, 2024

On May 25 from 9:00 am -3:00 pm, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the air show on Jones Beach.

To commemorate Memorial Day, jets and helicopters streaked across the sky in a spectacle as crowds amassed at Jones Beach to take part in the revelry. While there’s nothing wrong with celebratory spirit, the crowds of people do impose a threat to the protected wildlife on Jone Beach.

Piping plovers, a near threatened bird species, has a fenced in habitat at Jones Beach where they can live and breed. Around this time of the year, the piping clovers are laying eggs and hatching so it is crucial their habitats were not distubed. Our task as volunteers is to ensure that none of the visitors went near the fence or upset the nesting birds. We also warned off people flying kites or throwing frisbee or beach ball near the enclosures.

Volunteers who participated include (6 hours):

Yang Amy Wu, Hunter Chen, Maxim Li, Sofia Chen, Shinree Zhang, Zihan Wang, Izabelle Gu, Leah Chan, Brian Xiong, Eric Xiong, Leo Zheng, Jordan Bae, Isabelle Tsui, Natalie Tsui, Brooke Zheng, Yubo Sun, Wilbur Wei, Emma Wei, Serena Wu, Jolina Wu, Phillip Wu, Jasmine Wang, and Daniel Fan.
