Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) branch in NJ has many members talented in math, history, science, engineering, bilingual skills, sports, music, art, and writing, etc. Since most of our members have tight schedule even over the weekends, besides encouraged to participate in our group activities, GPA promotes small team scale, even individual scale volunteer activities using his/her own talents. The more flexible the way to volunteer is, the greater achievement our volunteers could make.
Based on that, we launched a year-round “Youth EdTutoring” project on December 1st, 2018. Members Amber Yu, Han Li, and Edward Cao started to volunteer and contribute their spare time by tutoring students in need of help. Amber Yu is helping a boy of a West Windsor-Plainsboro School with his homework and social ability enhancement in West Windsor Library on weekday nights, for an hour per lesson, year-round. Parents of the boy are very grateful for what our GPA member Amber are doing. Han Li and Edward Cao, instead of tutoring students face to face, are doing Virtual (online) English teaching for elementary students in rural areas of Jiangxi Province, China, on every Sunday night, for 45 minutes per lesson, year-round. Most of their students are considered “Left-Behind” children, whose parents have to be away from home to work in the urban areas. Edward Cao actually had some experience teaching a class of students in a rural village of Yunnan Province, China during the summer 2018. It is a great opportunity for our GPA members to contribute their English and Chinese bilingual skills and help such students speak fluent English as well as learn about American culture.
Congratulations to Amber Yu, Han Li, and Edward Cao, and we expect more and more GPA members become committed to the Youth EdTutoring Project!
