AYLUS Great Neck Branch Volunteered at Friendship Garden on 5/18/2024(statepark30)

On May 18, 2024, 9:30AM to 12PM, volunteers from the Aylus Great Neck branch carried out an environmental protection activity in the Friendship Garden, using various tools to remove invasive alien plants.
In the early morning, after the volunteers gathered, they received a brief introduction, learned about the harm of alien plants, and divided into groups to start cleaning invasive plants with various tools. The volunteers carefully dug out the plants’ roots to ensure they would not regenerate. After a morning of hard work, a large area of invasive plants was removed and the growth of native plants was restored.
Due to the rising sea level that contributes to making the environment more wet and humid, many plants aren’t adapted to these conditions thus hindering their survival rate. After removing the invasive species, we plan to plant more native azaleas on the outside where the dirt is dry and then plant other plants that will be able to thrive in the humid conditions in this local ecosystem.
This event not only enhanced everyone’s environmental awareness, but the Aylus Great Neck branch plans to continue to hold similar activities to encourage more people to participate in environmental protection. The efforts of the volunteers set a good example for the community and promoted the improvement of the ecological environment.
