Greater Memphis branch members organized several fundraising yard sales and lemonade sales to raise money for mental health programs in Tennessee. More and more crime is being linked to mental health issues, and could be prevented if individuals were able to access and receive treatment and assistance at an early stage. Alan and Evan decided to help the TN Mental Health Regional Intervention Program, which provides services for citizens who suffer from mental health problems. It’s a positive parenting program for families with children ages 2-6 that are displaying any type of behavioral concerns. The child does not need to have a diagnosis and the program is of no cost to enrolled families. Parents attend the program with their child for two hours twice a week. During the program, parents work with their case manager to learn strategies to help shape their child’s behavior. The children are in a preschool-like setting, intentionally working on things like social skills and table manners. While there is no cost for the program, it is time intensive. Changing behavior takes time and parents can plan to spend between four to eight months in the program. The program is grant funded through the TN Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and is licensed at the University of Memphis.
